Lot Essay
Sophie (1818-1877), daughter of King William I of Württemberg and his wife Catherina Paulovna, was married to her cousin King William III of the Netherlands in 1839 and thus became the daughter-in-law of her aunt Queen Anna Paulovna of the Netherlands (see following lot).
The present miniature is after an oil painting by Winterhalter, of which two versions are known, one, signed, in the Rijksmuseum, and the other, signed and dated 1863, exhibited in Het Loo. Another miniature after this painting will be illustrated in K. E. Schaffers-Bodenhausen and M. E. Tiefhoff-Spliethoff, Catalogue of the Portrait-Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Orange-Nassau, Zwolle 1993, cat. nr 122.
