AN AUSTRIAN GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE BOX
maker's mark "IGA", Vienna, 1793, with the Vienna duty mark 1806/1807

Circular box with independent cover, the base and cover set with four panels of cross-cut agate panels divided by gold stripes and centred by small agate disks, the sides set with 16 various hardstone panels numbered on the gold mount inside the cover, the outer gold mounts engraved with dots alternating with leaves -- 69 mm diameter.

Lot Essay

This unusual box is an interesting witness of the popularity of Johann Christian Neuber's "Stein Cabinets Tabatièren", imitating even the engraved numbers referring to an explanation of the various hardstones.
