Tsar Nicolas I of Russia (1796-1855) with receding dark hair, moustache and sidewhiskers, wearing a dark green uniform with gold-embroidered red collar and gold epaulettes, decorated with the blue moiré sash and the breast star of the Imperial Russian Orders of Saint-Andrew, the star of the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-Vladimir combined with the Royal English Order of the Garter, the Imperial badge for 30 years of Distinguished Military Services, the badge of the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-George and the Imperial Russian Medal for the Turkish Campaign 1828-1829, and the badge of the Royal Order of the Crown of Württemberg; oval -- 167 mm high, carved wood frame with easel stand; together with a daguerrotype depicting the same sitter, circa 1850/1855, oval -- 42 mm high, gilt-metal mounted within a rectangular plush-lined brown leather case with gold-stamped maker's mark "Barache". Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaievna of Russia (1822-1892), later Queen of Württemberg, daughter of the sitter; Grand Duchess Vera Constantinovna of Russia (1854-1912), later Duchess of Württemberg, niece of the latter (the miniature inv. nr 1035, the daguerrotype inv. nr 1362); thence by family descent to the present owner.
