Queen Maria-Luisa of Spain as Princess of Parma, with short curly powdered hair, a blue-striped lace-set bow tied around her neck, wearing a silver-embroidered blue silk dress with white lace edged décolleté; oval -- 36 mm high, silver frame with glazed silk reverse and foliate border set with rose-cut diamonds and emeralds.

Lot Essay

Maria-Luisa (1751-1819) was the third child of Duke Philip of Parma (see following lot) and his wife Louise-Élisabeth of France. She was married on 4 September 1765 to the future King Charles IV of Spain (see lot 371). Posterity has retained an image of a lascivious and dominating woman, immortalized by Goya's unflattered portraits. For a miniature depicting the Queen four decades later, see lot 365.
