Lot Essay

The three sons of the Duke and Duchess of Cadiz (see preceding lot) depicted on the present miniatures are: Don Francisco de Asis (1822-1902), who was declared King of Spain and the Indies by Royal Decree, 10 October 1846, after having married his first cousin Isabella II, Queen of Spain (see lot 373). The Infante Enrique (1823-1870), who was created The Infante of Spain, 1st Duke of Sevilla, but deprived of his title by Royal Decree in 1867, married Elena Maria de la Assompcion de Castelvi y Shelly Fernandez de Cordova, daughter of the 9th Count de Castella, in 1847. He was Vice-Admiral of the Spanish Fleet and was killed in a duel with the Duke of Montpensier. The Infante Eduardo Felipe (1826-1830) died in childhood.
