Lot Essay

Louis-Matthieu Comte Molé (Paris 1781-1855) was Minister of Justice under Napoléon, in 1813, Minister of the Marine under Louis XVIII 1815-1818, Minister of the Foreign Office in 1830 under Louis-Philippe and Prime Minister 1836-1839. In 1840, he became a member of the Académie Française.
The miniaturist Lebelle (also spelled Sebelle) was specialised in views of Paris monuments, always executed in the complicated fixé-sous-verre technique (see Léo R. Schidlof, La miniature en Europe, Graz, 1964, I, p. 489).
