Elector Maximilian III Joseph wearing a silvered armour with a blue-lined red velvet cloak draped over his left shoulder, his white-powdered hair dressed in curls and falling in long coils onto his shoulders, decorated with the sash of the Bavarian Order of Saint-George and the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece; cloudy sky background; on vellum, oval -- 79 mm high, gilt-metal frame with ribbon-tie surmount.

Lot Essay

Maximilian III Joseph of Wittelsbach (1727 Munich - 1777 Munich) succeeded his father, Emperor Charles VII of the Holy Roman Empire, as Elector of Bavaria in 1745, recognizing Empress Maria-Theresia's (see following lot) rights on the Holy Roman Empire. Like his father, he was an important patron of the Arts.
