ATTRIBUTED TO BENCINI, circa 1750/1760

Empress Maria-Theresia of Habsburg, her right arm resting on a red velvet cushion with gold embroidered borders and tassels, next to the Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the Royal Crown of Saint-Stephen of Hungary, her short powdered curly hair adorned with a jewelled tiara, wearing matching ear-pendants and similar jewellery at her corsage, a frilled white embroidered lace scarf around her neck, wearing a silver-embroidered blue velvet dress with white lace border and sleeves, a gold brocade cloak lined with red velvet falling over her right shoulder; oval -- 79 mm high, artist's join to right hand lower border, gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

Maria-Theresia (1717-1780), Archduchess of Austria, succeeded her father, Emperor Charles IV, in 1740. She was crowned Queen of Hungary in 1741 and Queen of Bohemia in 1743. In 1736, she married Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine (1708-1765). Among her numerous children are Queen Marie-Antoinette of France and Queen Maria-Carolina of Bourbon of Naples (see lot 170).
