The apotheosis of King Louis XVI of France (1754-1793): the crowned King's head in profile emerging from clouds and welcomed by putti one of whom is holding the martyr's palm; oval -- 77 mm high, gilt-metal frame; together with a pair of biscuit porcelain reliefs showing the profiles of the Kings's children Madame Royale (1778-1851) and the future King Louis XVII (1785-?) facing each other, on a cracked oval blue glass base -- 71 mm wide, wood frame. Lot Essay

This miniature by Violet, who emigrated to England during the Revolution, commemorates the execution of the King on 21 January 1793, as one can see from the signature on the backing paper which reads: Le 21 janvier 1798 P. Violet invt ett fecit.
