ITALIAN SCHOOL, circa 1834

Maria-Cristina of Savoy, Queen of Naples, wearing a low-cut mauve dress with frill-bordered white underslip, her centre-parted brown hair dressed in tight curls and tied in an Apollo-knot, wearing pearl drop ear-pendants and a rich "lover's knot" pearl tiara with a long embroidered gauze veil and yellow paradise-bird feathers -- 66 mm diam., gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

This miniature is inspired by the full-length oil portrait of the Queen, by Carlo de Falco, signed and dated 1834, in the Castle of Caserta, Naples.
Maria-Cristina of Savoy (1812-1836), daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele I of Sardinia and his wife Maria Teresa (see lots 236 and 238), was married in 1832 to Ferdinand II, King of Naples-Two-Sicilies, nicknamed Re Bomba. She was the mother of King Francis II of Naples-Two-Sicilies.
