Cohen-de Ricci considered this book "un des plus beaux du XVIII siècle," particularly due to the engravings in the first volume by Moreau, which make that work "a masterpiece" (Ray). La Borde began this publication project with Moreau, but after a falling out with the artist, brought in Le Bouteux, Le Barbier and Saint-Quentin to complete the illustrations for volumes II-IV.
