Indian Sports. Patna: Behar Amateur Lithographic Press, circa 1828-29.

First and second series, oblong 2° (295 x 395 & 275 x 405mm). First series with lithographic title and 12 plates dated June - August 1828, all mounted. (Some slight surface soiling.) Original wrappers (torn), modern cloth box. Second series with lithographic title and 11 plates only (of 12, lacking plate 3 Tiger Shooting) dated September 1829, all mounted, original wrappers preserved. (Some leaves slightly soiled.) Early 20th-century half calf, spine in compartments with red lettering pieces (scuffed).

Charles D'Oyly, a noted amateur artist, was a Servant of the East India Company in Bihar, Patna and Calcutta, and was one of the first to introduce lithography into India with his 'Amateur Lithographic Press' founded in 1828. These series of hunting prints are recorded in Abbey Travel 447 (first series only) and Schwerdt I-149, and a further six plates published in 1830 are known. (2)
