Lot Essay

Engelbart Joosten was born in 1717. He became a member of The Hague's silversmiths guild in 1755, and died in 1789. He was one of the finest silversmiths of The Hague, who largely worked in the Louis XV style. His objects are most often recognizable through the quality of ornamentation

This tureen is one of a set of three, one large and two smaller. The larger tureen of the set is preserved in the collection of The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. One of the smaller is in the collection of The Haags Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, which, also bearing the coat-of-arms of Neukirchen-Nijvenheim, forms a pair with the present lot
