Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Francis Windham of Sardhill, Somerset and in 1635 married Thomas Morgan of Machen and Tredegar (1660-1664). Steegman identifies the boy as her elder son William, the builder of Tredegar House, who, however, married in 1661, he had six younger brothers
