Lot Essay

The sitter was the 6th daughter of Edward, 4th Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Hastings, 2nd Earl of Huntingdon. She married Thomas, 2nd Lord Arundell of Wardour, a devoted Royalist. She is chiefly remembered for her gallant weeklong defence of Wardour Castle against the parliamentary Commanders Sir Edward Hungerford and Colonel Strode in May 1643.
