Lot Essay
According to Mrs Watts, the artist 'painted two portraits for Lord Wolverton (2nd Baron)' then Mr George Grenfell Glyn, and of his wife's he wrote in July 1860 asking Mr Watts to give the neck a little additional roundness, but he also says '"I am more delighted every day with both pictures."'
Lord Wolverton (1824-1887), who appears in the DNB, came from a banking family. He sat as M.P. for Shaftesbury in the liberal interest from 1857 to 1873, when he succeeded his father in the peerage, and was a close associate of Gladstone, staunchly supporting the scheme of home rule for Ireland. His wife was Georgiana Maria, daughter of the Rev. George Frederick Tuffnel of Uffington, Berks. Married on 22 June 1848, they had no children but devoted themselves to good works. At Iwerne Minster in Dorset, one of their country seats, they supported two orphanages in connection with the Home Boy Brigade originated by Lady Wolverton, and Lord Wolverton gave his salary as post-master general to secure beds in a convalescent home for sick London postmen. Presumably the name of his family firm, Glyn, Miles, Currie & Co., was represented in that of William's and Glyn's Bank, which existed until recently.
