It is interesting to see Linton applying to a portrait values more usually deployed in his historical subject pictures. The brocade hanging is distinctly 'Tudor', and the treatment of head and hands suggests study of Holbein. Parallels exist in the work of such younger contemporaries as Frank Cadogan Cowper and William Strang.
