Lot Essay

The overall form of this commode relates to a group of commodes supplied by Gilles Joubert, subcontracting to Roger van der Cruse (R.V.L.C.) and Léonard Boudin, among others, for the use of the crown between 1770 and 1775 (see: 'Gilles Joubert as Subcontractor: Some Recent Discoveries', Furniture History Society Journal, 1988, pp. 32-8). Identical apron mounts appear on the pair of commodes by R.V.L.C., delivered by Joubert for the Salon de Compagnie of Madame du Barry at Versailles in 1772 (ibid., fig. 7) and on the pair of commodes by M-G Cramer that were delivered for the Chambre à Coucher of the comte de Provence at Fontainebleau in 1771 (ibid., fig. 5). The distinctive ram's head angle mounts and closely related parquetry is shared with two commodes by Simon Oeben, illustrated in R. Stratmann, 'Der Ebenist Simon Oeben', Aachener Kunstblätter, 1972, pp.262-81, nos.1 and 5
