Further details
Renton, appearing in their fourth Cup Final, emphatically defeated the Lanarkshire side Cambuslang 6-1 to become the first team to score six goals in a Scottish F.A. Cup Final (Celtic repeated the scoreline against Hibernian in the 1972 Cup Final). On the 19th May 1888 Renton challenged the F.A. Cup Winners, West Bromwich Albion, to a "World Championship Decider" which Renton won 4-1, thereafter claiming to be the "Champions of the World".
Renton, a renowned team in the 1870's-1880's, were one of the original members of the Scottish League, but became the first Scottish League Club to be suspended from the League for "professionalism" after playing only five games in the opening League Championship, season 1890-91. They were re-admitted but again were expelled in season 1897-98, Hamilton Academicals taking their place. By the end of 1898 Renton had disappeared from top-level participation
