A Volcanic Stone Figure of Ganesha
Indonesia, East Java, Majapahit, 13th/14th Century
Well carved seated on a double-lotus throne with the soles of his feet adjoined, holding in his four arms his attributes of an axe and rosary and his swirling trunk reaching over to a bowl of sweets across his swelling potbelly, wearing a short dhoti incised with a diaper pattern and sashes extending down to the base, a cobra slung across his shoulder and intricate foliate armlets, his face with a humorous expression flanked by finely carved flapping ears and surmounted by a conical headdress with beaded festoons and kirttimukha pendant
