Lot Essay

Sukhothai Buddhist images are generally made from bronze or stucco, stone sculpture is extremely rare. Constructed from sections joined with lacquer as a binding substance, the figure was then likely lacquered overall; compare to another related example in Spink & Son Ltd., The Lion of the Shakyas, 1998, cat. no. 11.
