Self Portrait of the Artist bust length in grey Suit and black bow Tie resting his Chin on his right Hand

signed with monogram and dated September 1861,
watercolour
11 x 9in. (28 x 22.9cm)

and companion piece framed as a diptych

A Portrait of Alice Boyd half length seated in white Dress, black Shawl, reading a Book
signed W.B. Scott, inscribed Penkill, and dated July 1861,

Scott's self-portrait shows him at the age of fifty, before he lost his hair as a result of an attack of alopecia in 1862. He has something of the "arch-fiend expression"" which he is said to have possessed prior to his illness, and which may partly account for the attraction he had for women. In addition to his wife and Alice Boyd, he had a number of lady admirers, including Christina Rossetti

For a photograph of Scott taken the same year, see Raleigh Trevelyan, A Pre-Raphaelite Circle, 1978, facing p.97 (2)
