The Thames by Moonlight

signed with monogram,
watercolour heightened with white
18 x 12in. (45.7 x 30.5cm)

This view must be taken from Bellevue House, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, where Bell Scott and his wife settled in 1870 and where Alice Boyd spent the winter months with them. The artist is looking up the river towards Battersea; St Mary's Church, Battersea, appears on the left, and the river is spanned by the Battersea Railway Bridge, constructed in 1863. Alice exhibited a picture of Winter on the Thames at Chelsea, at the Royal Academy in 1873, and comparable subjects by Scott, also dating from the early 1870's are recorded.
