These sketches of four of the Prophets on Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling may have been made on the spot or from reproductions. "I confess to having lain on my back, the better to examine that ceiling, for hours', Scott wrote in his Autobiographical Notes (II,p.282), but he also referred to seeing 'the large photographs by Braun

It was in Italy in July/August 1862 with William Michael Rossetti, and again in the summer of 1873, together with his wife Miss Boyd, William Michael Rossetti and Lucy Madox Brown. Boyd's journeys included Rome. Scott's elder brother David had also studied the Sistine Chapel frescoes when he was living in Rome 1832-3. (4)
