Portrait of Robert Scott, bust length in frock Coat seated at a Table holding a Quill
inscribed Robert Scott, and signed and dated George Saunders 1799,
pencil drawing,
9 x 7¾in. (22.7 x 19.7cm)
Robert Scott, an engraver, was the father of David and William Bell Scott. He trained at the Trustees Academy, Edinburgh, under David Allan, and in 1799 moved to the upper floors of a tenement in Parliament Square, where he set up a large engraving workshop. Later he and his family settled at St Leonards. His admiration for Fuseli and Blake was inherited by his sons, and William Bell Scott's lifelong interest in print-making was inspired by working as his father's assistant.
