A 'TRANSITIONAL' SMALL-SWORD with slender double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section etched at the forte with conventional foliage and strapwork and with traces of gilding, iron hilt comprising double shells, short quillons with knob-shaped tips and barrel-shaped pommel, the shells pierced and chiselled with conventional foliage involving grotesque masks, and similar masks chiselled on each side of the quillon-block, the tips of the quillons, the centre of the knuckle-guard and the pommel, and wire-bound wooden grip, Dutch or German, circa 1650
