Details
Edward Adrian Wilson (1872-1912)
A miniature manuscript commonplace book, 1897-1899. 5 x 5cm., 23 pages of entries in ink by Wilson with quotes from Ruskin, Whittier, Knox Little, Archbishop Temple, Hinton and with one entry from Wilson himself 'Things justly disliked/and ascertained to be so, ought/to be disliked more and more/until we put an end to them;/and that we have always to/beware of getting used to evil,/no less than forgetting/good.' Original dark purple roan (rubbed, small split to upper joint).

An important memento, where Wilson recorded a number of the guiding principles of his life as well as recalling the day of his engagement to Oriana Souper. The first page includes four dates ending with Thursday 19 October 1899, the day of his engagement 'and from that day [Wilson] dated not only the beginning of his recovery [from tuberculosis] but also the real happiness of his life.' (G. Seaver, Edward Wilson of the Antarctic, London, 1941, p.61). The second entry presents Wilson's approach to life 'One should be kind - for kind words mean a kind heart, & a kind heart means self-discipline - faithful prayer, a stern hand against wrong - a gentleness with weakness, a giving up once & for all of sharp & cruel criticism - so easy - so self pleasing - but so unbecoming. The world will then be cleaner & our own souls will be nearer to God.'

[With:] British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913. A black silk cap ribbon with 'TERRA NOVA' woven in gilt thread, [1910], 44½in. (113cm.) long
