Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (manufacturers). No 254 'Tabloid' brand Medicine Chest (The Indian). 9 x 6¾ x 6¼in. (21 x 17 x 16cm.). An aluminium hinged lid, tray and fitted compartments in the base, the Burroughs Wellcome & Co. brand label fitted inside the lid, the front with legend 'THE IMPERIAL TRANS-ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION/1914/SIR E. SHACKLETON' lettered in hand in red paint, wiht remains of lettering '...[TABLOID B]RAND/MEDIC[AL EQUI]PMENT' on the lid, and 'TRADE/MARK/TABLOID/BRAND' on the front of the lid

New York, American Museum of Natural History, The Endurance, Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition, April-Oct. 1999 (travelling exhibition within the United States, 2000-2001).
We are grateful to Mrs Eileen Maughan, Archives Assistant, Heritage Archives, GlaxoSmithKline, for confirming that present model, no 254 (The Indian) (for which see the Burroughs Wellcome & Co Price List of 1913, p. 48) was ordered by the Expedition. The Price List describes the original contents as comprising 'sixteen 1¾oz. glass stoppered bottles and seven dr. phials of 'Tabloid' and 'Soloid' Brand products, instruments and tray carrying sundry dressings, etc. Weight about 12lb. An ideal equipment for missionary, expeditionary or itinerant use, when a smaller outfit than Nos. 250 or 251 is required.' The chest was produced in both Japanned sheet-steel or Aluminium.
