Macklin's pocket set of surgical instruments

A nickel-plated pocket surgical set, containing a glass vial of antiseptic solution, a reel of thread in a nickel-plated tube, a trocar and cannula, a pair of scissors, 2 pairs of forceps, 2 pairs of tweezers, a scalpel handle, 4 interchangeable scalpel blades in a protective case, 3 various probes, and 2 needles within a protective case, the fitted clamshell case engraved on the upper cover 'A.H. MACKLIN/SEPT. IST. 1910.' (occasional minor oxidisation to case and instruments), the case 110 x 64 x 30mm., contained in a leather etui (etui rubbed and with small tears).

PROVENANCE:
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), a 21st birthday present, and thence by descent to the present owners.

EXHIBITED:
New York, American Museum of Natural History, The Endurance, Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition, April-Oct. 1999 (travelling exhibition within the United States through 2000-2001).

Listed in Macklin's journal, '1 case of surgical instruments (pocket)' (entry for Saturday October 30th, 1915).
