Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917: Macklin's leather belt, 40in. (101.6cm.) long, leather with metal buckle and rings, a pocket incorporated to the left front, ink inscription 'A H MACKLIN'
and
Macklin's handstitched leather bowie knife sheath (without knife), 9in. (23cm.) high
PROVENANCE:
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners.
EXHIBITED:
New York, American Museum of Natural History, The Endurance, Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition, April-Oct. 1999 (travelling exhibition within the United States through 2000-2001).
Listed in Macklin's journal, 'I have a leather belt with a pocket which carries my watch. It carries a 5 inch sheath knife, the most valuable thing in the outfit.' (entry for Saturday October 30th, 1915).
