Captain and Quartermaster Archibald Mathieson, M.B.E. (1881-1947), born in Duns in the County of Berwickshire; joined the King's Own Scottish Borderers, aged 15 but later transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, serving 13 years with the Regiment; served during the South African War, 1899-1902 and was present at the battles of Modder River, Paardeburg and Driefontein; joined the New Zealand Permanent Military Forces at Timaru, 1920; Staff Sergeant, 1923; Warrant Officer Class II, 1926; Warrant Officer Class I, 1929 (Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, 1931); appointed Temporary Lieutenant and Quartermaster, 1940 (Meritorious Service Medal, N.Z. Army Orders, October, 1941); Captain and Quartermaster, 1942; discharged 1946.
