Sergeant Malcolm McPhee, M.M. served with the 2nd. Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the campaign in Malaya, 1941-42 where the regiment was engaged in fierce fighting in the North of the country including Grik Road (Battle Honour), Central Malaya, Ipoh and the Battle of Slim River (Regimental Battle Honours) and culminating in the battle of Singapore Island and its subsequent surrender, 15th. February, 1942. Sergeant McPhee was made a prisoner of war by the Japanese, and was later interned in Thailand.
