Lot Essay

The Travellers Club was founded in 1819 'to form a point of reunion for gentlemen who have travelled abroad and to afford them the opportunity of inviting as honorary visitors the principle members of all foreign missions and travellers of distinction'. These tureens would have formed part of the display plate of the club. Other examples of the plate from the Travellers Club include two soup tureens, one by William Burwash and Richard Sibley, 1810 and the other by William Burwash, 1815 which were sold at Christie's London 30th April 1996 lots 42 and 43 respectively.
