Lot Essay

The design on this dish, a circular, red, flaring motif, is created by the firing process. Rice straw, placed between dishes stacked in a kiln prior to firing, creates a type of red marking when it burns off called hidasuki or "fire sleeve-cording."

He was designated Bearer of Important Intangible Cultural Assests (or "Living National Treasure") in 1970.
