Lot Essay

Listening to my Sweet Pipings, or The Piping Boy, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911 (no.141). It was bought by Major The Hon. Alex P. Henderson, whose family acquired so many of the artist's later works, but is now apparently untraced. It is reproduced in The Studio LXXI, 1917, p.8, and in Anthony Hobson's 1980 monograph, fig.127

Kneeling or seated putti were a favourite motif of Waterhouse. They occur again in The Awakening of Adonis (R.A. 1900), which was sold in these Rooms on 24 November 1989 for #308,000, a record price for the artist
