Lot Essay

This belongs to a group of free standing sculptured figures of stucco from Iran, and is related to three heads in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin, said to have been found at Pragy. Stucco reliefs with some elements in the round as here, decorated the palaces of the Sejuk rulers in the 12th-13th centuries. The round face and almond eyes represent the canons of beauty - "the moon face" - of Persian literature in the period. For further details see:
