Lot Essay

The inscription is a well known Shi'a formula:
habb 'Ali ibn Abu Talib fard 'ala al-hadir w'al-gha'ib
(The love of 'Ali ibn Abu Talib is enjoined on the living and the dead)

The panel was probably one of a pair of shutters. Many of its decorative elements are typical of 15th century Persian decoration; the border composed of interlaced floral scroll and palmette scroll is commonly found in illuminations and metalwork of the period. For a wood panel with grid developed from a six pointed star dated 1499 seePope pl.1465C
