Lot Essay

The design of this clock is identical to that of a barometer veneered with lapis lazuli in the Wallace Collection (F.J.B. Watson, Catalogue, London, 1956, nos. F94 and F95, pl. 54), which has a pendant mantel clock. This pair, of slightly larger size, were originally thought to have been dated 1753 on the basis of an inscription on the barometer but it appears that this was misunderstood and did not in fact refer to the date of manufacture. They would appear to date from 1770-80, which is supported by Arthur Young's claim in his Travels in France to have met Scanegatty, whose name is engraved on the thermometer-plate, in the 1780's (information kindly supplied by Peter Hughes).
A matching clock of almost identical size to this example in Siena marble with movement by Crosnier, Paris, is in the library of the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris (Catalogue, no. 606). Another of this model, of unknown date, was in the Emil Glückstadt sale, Copenhagen, June 1924, lot 628
