Lot Essay

A design by Bérain of about 1696-1697 in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, commissioned by Cronström for the decoration of the Swedish Coronation Coach, incorporates a similar river God reclining by a dolphin (J. de la Gorce, Bérain, Paris, 1986, p. 55)

A bronze of le Rhône, the river God reclining amidst aquatic plants on a stepped rectangular base, after the statue by Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746) in the Place Bellecour, Lyon, sold from the Collection of Jacques Doucet, Gallerie Georges Petit, Paris, 6 June 1912, Part II, lot 106, shows stylistic similarities to these chenets.
