Lot Essay
The stamp appears to be that of J. P. Dusautoy, maître in 1779. Numerous examples of this model by the maker are known. One, lacking the trellis-pattern and with marquetry top was sold in these Rooms, 14 June 1990, lot 105.
Cf. F. J. B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, Metropolitan Museum, 1966, vol. I, pp. 277 and 280, for two very similar examples, unstamped but attributed to this maker, one of which was sold Sotheby's New York, 5 May 1984, lot 235. Another similar example stamped by this maker is also stamped by the marchand and ébéniste Nicolas Lannuier, who was probably responsible for its sale.
While tables of this model with marble tops are known, there are marks on the underside of the top which would be more consistent with a sliding top, therefore raising the possibility that the top may be associated.
