Stephens is better known as one of the leading sculptors of the Victorian era. He specialised in portrait busts but also executed full-length statues and some imaginative pieces. He was among the sculptors responsible for the standing figures of artists on the facade of Burlington House as remodelled by Sydney Smirke in the 1870s.
