The first English edition was made up of sheets printed in America as English printers were afraid to offend against English morality law. This presentation copy is particularly interesting in that Joyce first met Dr Gradowski née Kaemper (1890-1978) in the Autumn of 1917, while he was recuperating from an eye operation. They met on several occasions, and although his physical attraction to her was not reciprocated, on Joyce's return to Zurich in early January 1918, Joyce wrote two letters to the young Dr Kaemper, and they met briefly on one occasion in Zurich. Ellman mentions that Dr Kaemper was lent copies of Portrait and Chamber Music. However, it appears that these copies were in fact intended gifts from Joyce through the mediation of the Sempers in Locarno.
