Lot Essay

A preparatory study for the head of the Virgin in The Virgin adoring the sleeping Christ Child of 1627 in Palazzo Doria Pamphili, Rome, D.S. Pepper, op. cit., 1984, no. 115, pl. 141. The picture differs from the drawing in the detail of the mantle which entirely covers the Virgin's ear. Lloyd described the drawing as 'rather weak' but its autograph status is confirmed by the delicacy of the shading, the deft use of chalk in the outline of the left eye and the stronger accent of the line of the temple in the shaded area beneath the Virgin's mantle
A preparatory drawing of the Virgin's hands is in the Brera, V. Birke, op. cit., no. 114
