Lot Essay
This drawing was first identified by Catherine Johnson as a preparatory study for the head of Judith in the Judith and Holofernes of the mid 1620s in the Sedlmayer Collection, Geneva, D.S. Pepper, op. cit., 1984, no. 104, pl. 134. The picture differs in only minor details from the drawing, notably in the jewelled knot at the top of Judith's head which is only summarily indicated in the drawing.
Other preparatory drawings for the picture are in the Uffizi, The Metropolitan Museum and the Real Accademia di San Fernando, Madrid, O. Birke, op. cit., nos. 110-12 and fig. 52
