Lot Essay
A drawing of comparable character, the Virgin and Saint John standing before Christ on the Cross, is in the British Museum, J. Rowlands, The Age of Dürer and Holbein, German Drawings 1400-1500, London, 1988, no. 117. K.T. Parker advanced the attribution of the British Museum drawing on the basis of similarities to two woodcuts by this artist, the Crucifixion of 1517 and the Saint Philip in his series of the Apostles. The British Museum sheet is dated by Parker to the end of the second decade of the 16th Century. The artist's name is taken from a monogram on a group of single sheet woodcuts and book illustrations published betweeen 1516 and 1522 in Basel, Hagenau, Mainz and Strasburg
