Lot Essay

Trimarchi points out, loc. cit., that the angel was inspired by that in Gaulli's Sacrifice of Isaac of c. 1685-90 at Atlanta (R. Enggass, The Painting of Baciccio, University Park, Pennsylvania, 1964, fig. 126) and notes that the strong influence of Gaulli evident throughout makes unlikely a dating much later than the first decade of the 18th Century. Variants are in the Church of San Esteban, Segovia (Urrea Fernández, op. cit., where dated c. 1720; Trimarchi, op. cit., p. 40, no. 23) and in the Palacio Real, La Granja (Urrea Fernández, op. cit., p. 281, pl. LXXXI/2; Trimarchi, op. cit., pp. 40-1, no. 24).
