Lot Essay

Always known simply as 'Early Painting', the present picture was regarded by Daisy Philpot, the artist's sister, as a very early work and was dated in the 1944 exhibition catalogue 'about 1902 - age 17'. On stylistic grounds a dating later in the decade is preferable and it is tempting to surmise that, if the object held by the clothed youth is a bow, the picture may be 'Peace and War' exhibited at the New English Art Club in the winter of 1906, no.47
