Painted in 1936-7, the present work is a watercolour version of one of the artist's most important late oils of genre subjects, which was also included in the same 1937 exhibition and was last seen publicly in the exhibition, Spring '86, The Fine Art Society, London, 28 April-6 June 1986, no.48, illustrated in colour.
