Colonel Francis Adams, D.S.O., who was born in April 1874, was commissioned into the Indian Staff Corps in June 1894. A Major in the 20th Deccan Horse by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he arrived in the French Theatre of War in mid-October. As stated in War Services of British Officers of the Indian Army, Adams went on to win the 'Belgium Order of the Crown, 4th class; Belgium War Cross and French Order of Merit, Agriculture, 4th class'. He was also twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 28.5.1918 and 5.6.1919 refer), and advanced to Colonel in May 1920.
