Lot Essay

A very similar six-leaf screen probably from the same workshop, almost exactly this size but with arched cresting, was sold in these Rooms April 19, 1990, lot 154.

The seated figure in the central far right cartouche is wearing either the Portugese Order of Christ or the Portugese Order of St. James of the Sword.
